Scrapping Kinda Sucks

Just took in a good load, well for me :)

$428 of copper pipe and wire, mostly wire. Half was mine as we agreed to split it but he did give me the $14 from his half.

Neighbor down the street had the old stuff from his remodeling. All the wire in one tote and a pipe of copper pipe. I cleaned up and sorted it, to try n max things and save time at the scrap yard. Was a good learning experience, since I've only taken in shred steel n a bit of alum so far. Got to try out my $20 amazon wire shears on the copper and a larger wire type. He had several(9) wire types but the yard called them all romex(one they were like idk but meh, then after looking at it, just put it all together But was glad i separated it for them to examine).

I also traded this miter saw stand i found scrapping For some of the better stripping type wire(10g romex) and we also agreed. I'd keep the odds n ends that i separated, for my trouble. Stuff like bare wire ends/connectors, wire with lots of tape or paint and the valves, parts with plastic n bits of brass that need cleaned up. Finicky things I'll put more time into cleaning up this winter or sell as dirty. I got buckets i need to go thru already.

Good find and happy with my part of it. Basically it's equal to the entire amount of romex and copper pipe I've found, in my TEN months of scrapping. So it gives me a good idea of what i have and it's not much. Still as I've said, scrapping is the way for me to get my stamina up and reduce spending what i have. I'm gonna get a real job one of these days.

No wait, bout half the romex i have, is from another remodel down the road. Prior to scrapping and right before my mother passed.

I don't find much good stuff. All types of scrappers look/stop for the good stuff LOL

Whelp got a complaint bout my scrap hoard, knew it was coming and had hoped to be further along. But I'm close to having it under control.

Sad part is by the reactions of the people I've talked to, it's not who i expected.

Regardless I'll finish getting it cleaned up soon :)

Best advice I ever got, Trust no one! Don't mater how much you helped them or how long you've known them ;)

I hear you i try my best to keep the old lady that bitches happy but the complaining come s when you least expect it

So by now you've probably figured out how the scrap world works.

Your local scrap yard is a dealer who resells to a bigger scrap dealer. This repeats until the scrap arrives at a steel mill or aluminum melting plant, etc.

So your goal to maximize profits is get a large as a load as possible and take it to the dealer who is closest to the mill. And if you can repeat these trips to the same dealer, he will pay you extra.

High fuel prices drive down the price of scrap since the whole business depends on transporting the scrap to a local mill.

And the other way people have made some good bucks is picking through the scrap for re-sellable parts.

Exactly and why I'm hoarding certain types of metal and plan to drive far to sell them.

I got many things also set aside to sell but I'm not at the health capacity, to handle scrapping and selling.

Fuel effects everything and part of why I'll never be that great at making money scrapping. Just not enough volume with my truck for the distance to local scrap yards and trailers are $$$$ I do have a lead on a free small trailer but it needs work and tires. My main focus since mid spring has been to deal with what i got(winter i didn't take a single load in).

I'm far far far from efficient. 40mins to tear down a large appliance for maybe $2-3 profit upgrade. 95% of the processing i do is not efficient but it helps me build stamina and is far less trips to the yard with my truck. I'm kinda at the, i can do stuff/be active 7 days a week but we are talking less than a normal person, prob less than half of what they actively do. Still this time last year, my active time for the entire week was like a easy 1 day of a normal person now and have been that way for many years. I'm good at math and viewing this in the long term to achieve my other goals. At some point I'll get a 30ish hour a week job and that will be all I can handle due to the long shifts(on my feet for 8hrs). Well and normal stuff we all have to do, clean, laundry and shopping.

Last year i worked on moving stuff around(with help) and it was not even a hard work day. Took me a week to recover. I can pull a long 8-12hr day now but the next few days I'm dead. Like maybe 3hrs max of light activity for the following days. Be easier/faster recovery if i slept well but I'm so sore(TRT has spend up my recovery, i started right as i also started scrapping).

I was pretty weak and it'll take awhile to recover, the few health events before i scrapped set me back. That while leg not working for a few months, was really more as i didn't walk normal for 6 more months. Before i walked outside or on the treadmill regular and lost weight but i lost all that progress.

The past several years i could not tolerate above 70 deg, I'd heatstroke easy. Right now I'm much better but 80's is still bout the same. I worked outside this morning and had to take 20 or so cool down breaks. Basically 5mins on and 5-10mins too cool down.

Really should of got more done before summer. This is gonna suck, now that i have a time limit to get it cleaned up but I'll do what i can do.

Anyways I'm making a few bucks and working on getting in better shape :)

[edit] Most people on here work an 8hr or more day, then work on the project or other normal stuff like yard work. That'd kill me!

For the record NONE of my close neighbors properties are w/o issue or recent past violations. Expect one lady but she is farthest and doubt she would care/complain.

The one i expected, has had issues others complained about and the other i didn't expect, has current issues.

I live on a dead end street, set back and my property does not even touch the road. Most people don't know there is a house there. People always say it's nice back here. I tell them it's like living out in the country but also in town. Only because i was talking to one neighbor, did a few others find out, that I had been/was scrapping. AND they gave me scrap! 6 neighbors so far.

I approached my one neighbor back in spring about my winter hoard, never herd anything from him before. Told him my plan to clean it up and I admit that i fell short of it. But I'm not that far off. Also he has given me scrap 3 or 4 times since. Two of them he just brought the stuff over and left it on my property, including a trailer tire i don't want but meh I'll pay for the disposal. If i do have trouble and have to spend a bit to fight or w/e, it'll be his scrap money that I use. As it was a few hundred worth LOL

But I'm not fighting it if i don't have to and there are options too. Why not... because I WANT the same thing! AND I'm almost there. This barely speeds up/changes my plans. I can still protest it but I'm going to continue cleaning it up AS PLANNED! Now if all the things i do isn't enough and they try to be dicks. I am not broke and will fight ;)

Already had piles ready to take in LOL

But judging by the reactions of most people I've talked to. Their body language shows glee at the news or my perceived hardship. EVEN the ones that encouraged me to scrap and i gave items that i found too! In fact one person I'd loosely call a friend said it's valid and kinda i deserve it! Not a single person is on my side.

NEVER trust anyone, they will always try and kick you when your down ;) I'm just disappointed in the people i know but i kinda expect it from them. Guess I'll never learn to stop having hope people will be decent.

I'm not complaining in this post or to them. I want/understand it needs to be done and not gonna give them the satisfaction. I can't get to my Fucking garage! I know, I fucked up :ROFLMAO:

Honestly this will prob result in more scrap being given to me in the future. As it'll increase local town awareness that i scrap :) I do have a plan to contain/hide it but I'm not sharing that with anyone ;)

Due to the excessive heat, took in less than ideal loads but got it done. 3 loads in the last 3 days(should of been 2 or 1.5 worth of metal). I'll work on prepping another for next week this weekend but i got the majority of stuff moved that i wanted, to make room for moving a car.

Hell yea, keep on moving as long as you can take the heat.
I can't take it. I'm a total bitch with extreme temps, hot or cold.
Been 105+ index all week - Like a gd furnace out there.

Oh it sucked and i took a zillion cool down breaks, that basically made everything take 2-3x as long(over 3hrs to remove screws from this pile of alum, that would of taken half that. If i didn't have to stop n go cool down n drink water). So the few hours in early morning and couple at night wasn't really efficient. I had planned to work inside with the AC(still up to 80 but also fan).

What i need is a good fan to use outside and IF i ever get my porch area set up I'll mount one maybe. I found one but needs fixed and I will buy one if i have to. Still scrapping outside is not very stationary and need lots of room to work with most that junk. Ideally I'd move a car out of my garage and use the AC in there BUT until i get the polebarn cleaned out.

Be awhile before i have an ideal scrap setup. With the generator i found, might even rig up power in the polebarn to work out there some. I'd have them turn it back on but the monthly fee, isn't worth it unless I'm out there all the time.

get a large floor fan , and zip tie a small drip system around the outside on the discharge side it to make a water mister. i did that on my 4 footer when we had my daughters garduation party outside one year.

You cannot trust anyone when it comes to making money people are so fucking jealous of stupid shit. If you are doing well act like you are broke.

People always seem to think I'm making good money scrapping. I invite them to ride along, so i can show them what it takes. Hours of driving round, unload, sort, process, all the trash and load up. I'm only reducing the money spending that i already have. Sure some do real good but i got no connections really and their are scrappers galore around here.

Got this one guy who's like you should fix n sell this or that. Keep telling him I don't have the time, I'm at max effort just to keep up. and obviously i didn't for spring really. Why i had to almost completely stop scrapping the past two months. I was barely making any head way but now i know, do not let winter stuff get piled up that bad(also a bit from fall i didn't finish).

Been trying to get a hand moving a couple vehicles the past two weeks. Wish i had time to get the parts i need removed and haul em off but I don't. Oh well I got the majority of stuff moved. Technically they are not allowed to come on my property to inspect registration. Just figured I'd tuck em out back again, for a show of good faith. But I'm not paying $50 an hour or putting up with the BS(games) from those available to help.

And if your broke, act like your broker than hillbilly with no cars on blocks.

Welp almost there, just got a few things left to do. Was suppose to have help this morning but no one i know is worth $100 an hour LOL

Fortunately i planned for no help, it just would of been nice.

Still technically I don't even have a deadline yet, we'll see what they say here soon. Already got a plan if they decide to want more than the inch I'm giving and demand a mile. Heck i may do some annoying Legal things to my neighbor anyway :)

There was a guy on Youtube that scrapped and would sell alot of the electronic shit on Ebay he must have made really good money because he bought a nice place in Nova Scotia and quit doing youtube.

Had to run around n find a used tire place to mount some OLD tires, so i could move a car(wally world said no). Stupid four lug wheels. Tried to borrow/buy some rollers but just a lot of wasted time messaging.

Got what i wanted done mostly. Still trying to find out why i didn't get a letter or if i have a deadline, seems no one knows.
