Scrapping Kinda Sucks

These are the current ferrous per ton rates at the yard I'm going to use.
Looks like about .10 - .11 cents per pound depending on what you have.
I'm assume scrap cars would be in the $230/ton category. Is that correct?

From their website:

We will grade 3 types of Ferrous Metals: (Weights in Net Tons)

  • Misc. Iron: $230.00 (farm machinery, appliances [compressors separate], tin, cast, etc.)
  • Prepared Iron: $210.00 (3ft x 18in or shorter, 1/8 inch or thicker, no cast iron)
  • #1 Prep Plate & Structural: $220.00 (consists of I-Beams & plate steel, 3ft long x 18in wide x 18in tall or smaller, ¼ inch or thicker)
Around here(& the scrappers i watch) cars are usually lower/same or close to shred(all basic generic common steel stuff), other steel types are usually worth more! Yard i went to last fall, shred n cars were exact same price but they only had one other steel type, rotors and no other steel categories. Some places will have cast iron or auto engines category. Some places/yards prep/prepared is only 1/4" thick and they differ by oversize for their various categories place to place. This is why I've not taken in any of the higher value metals i have, partly to not wanting to call 7 or so places n deal with bitchy office chics LOL

You also need to ask them what one is for rotors cause usually that is a higher rate n it's own category as well. Plus then there will be the ignorant bad mood employee, that don't know jack bout their own job n is in a rush.

Be specific and ask them what is their vehicle rate.

I called this morning.

The titles don't have be in my name. The seller has to fill out their part. The yard keeps the titles.

Cars are in the 'Misc. Iron' category. Same as appliances, farm equipment, tin, cast etc. $230/ton.

They don't have a separate spot for rotors on their list.

I use to scrap but it is absolutely not worth it these days. If I know I'm gonna make a bunch of scraps like when I put this truck together I'll pile it up then call my buddy and tell him to come get it all. Last time I brought anything down I brought the complete body of an 07 sierra crew cab and got $120 No thanks. Just the effort to load it wasn't worth it.

If you make good money/have good income and there are decent people ready to remove it for FREE(not charging you), I totally agree :)

I would of gave one of my parts vehicles away many years ago(when scrap was higher and i didn't want to be bothered with it) but the person i offered it too, was greedy and wanted to charge me LOL

If i had a job working enough hours, even making min wage. Then i might scrap a bit as a hobby but I'd be A LOT pickier in what i drag home/collect. Still i need to get into better shape and hard work at my own schedule while making a bit of money works for now.

Sometimes i wish i wasn't so good at math :)

Lucky you, not getting near $230 a ton round here I'd bet, was $140 last fall

You learn what yards pay better .
I have had guy nit pick my aluminum i told him forget it I will take it to the other yard near by and did that and got the better rate no questions .
Are yards have heavy iron , shread and the the other metals .
I generally have the stuff separated for max money

Found this decent common lower grade wire explanation vid(i'm sure local yards still vary). YT search is so broken, been trying to find a vid about sorting common wire types for years! Most YTers just wanna talk the highest stuff you find from construction that gets good $$$(clickbait). Yards around here rather you lump it all together n get lowest grade.

Helpful for me since that is 95% of what i get. Once in awhile I'll find some nice stuff, that is a higher price(romex types) or maybe worth stripping n getting the highest value.

In the mitten a title is required and they take the title like a sale
If I don’t have a title here’s how I scrap them. I push the complete vehicle on the trailer, I get the sawsall out and cut it in half, I cut it across the top of the windshield and across the floor right in front of the seat.then I pull the rear half off the trailer.
I tie half the car down and take half to the scrapyard, once you cut it in half you don’t need a title.
A couple days later you take the other half in. I’ve done this before.

One time a had a VW Jetta on the trailer, I just cut it in half, a guy brings his truck over for some work, he see the Jetta on the trailer cut in half, he says what in the hell are you doing.
I told he the guy wouldn’t pay his bill so I going to drop off half of the car in his yard. Lol.
He says, here let me give you some money, lol.

Just cut a vehicle in half and it’s now considered parts, so you don’t need a title when you take it to the scrapyard.
It doesn’t take long to cut something in half.

Buddy of mine got rid of a parts car with no title that way. Half one week the other the next. BUT he bought it from a salvage yard we knew, so it deff wasn't gonna be a problem(as in not stolen, bank owned or anything like that).

These are my fav winter gloves. Didn't think I'd like the open cuff(safety cuff) but it's great for in/out of the truck street scrapping. I got some fully dipped cuffed for working long term outside also tho(they are not as warm even tho good insulated) but just ordered some lighter(non insulated) fully dipped open cuff, to try in the truck as it warms up.

What i also like bout the frog gloves, is if i get them messy. I'll just grab some snow n clean em off, usually wipe/dry with some paper towel as well(gas stations). Deff my warmest gloves. I bought 3 pair for the better price on ebay and only used the one so far, I'll prob be able to save/use a fresh pair next year.

Other cuffed type, not as warm

The insulated gloves deff cost more but I've been able to make them last and only will prob have used 1 pair of each for this winter. I've also used the Harbor freight yellow gloves as i had a few pair already(from coupons), they are a bit warmer than those cheap light ebay ones.

Gloves are a consumable scrapping(use them for cleaning, yardwork & automotive of course). Use plenty of disposable type as well and just ordered another 1000(will last me a year or so).

A few weeks ago in a snow storm i went to run some errands and found a trailer ramp/gate. When i first saw it didn't know what it was and looked like someone might of moved it off the road some. Placing it at the entrance of one of my stops. Being large n kinda heavy they didn't get it entirely off. On my way out i hopped out to take a look at it but too much traffic, so i flipped it up onto the snow bank(more visible) and left. Since i had to come back that way on my way home figured if it was still there I'd grab it.

Well it was there, now getting dark and i went to load it but only noticed after i dragged it to my truck n flipped it around, that it had a plate on it. Didn't have a lot of time to debate, as still some traffic for that store. So just slide it into my bed and figured I'd see what to do later.

A few googles said, just drop the plate into a mailbox(or police or SOS, not going by either anytime soon but a mailbox np). So i attached a note with my info for them to pick up the ramp.

Of course the post office called me n was like WTF! I explained and they aid they'd figure it out.

That was maybe 3-4 weeks ago and not herd anything. It's a large lawn type trailer ramp/gate, angle iron and mesh. Prob 100ish lbs. Looks fine, hinges seems ok, so failure was on the trailer itself. Or maybe a hit n run?

I'm in no rush to scrap it but doubt I'll ever hear anything bout it. Might be worth keeping or selling idk.

We had a warm up n scrap picked p nice, been kicking my butt as I'm getting back into it. Took a smaller load in today, mostly bulky but not that heavy stuff. Local shred/cars is at $200 a ton. I got a few more loads to haul in soon, now that snow & ice is gone :)

Decent amount of spring cleaning or moving so far. Pretty good loads. All the other scrappers been running/driving round like madmen trying to get it all LOL. Seems dumb to me, they gonna get pulled over eventually.

If I'm still doing this next winter, I'll deff have a better setup to organize :ROFLMAO:

The day after you take it in you know what's gonna happen.. j/s
Good on you for trying to help the guy.

If that happens and he finally calls, I'll tell him too late! You can only wait so long LOL

After dark, I knew the chances of it being found where slim and that after that long, no one was looking for it. Also that the store(a major one) would have it's people deal with it.

Had friend that at his previous company was driving the stake body truck and owned a weekend lake house. He was driving down the road and seen someone throwing away some furniture, so he stopped and loaded it up for the lake house. Turns out they where getting evicted and someone got the company name of the truck and called. He even had their mail.

We used to take care of the mechanical equipment in some large retail stores back in the late 80's Another coworker told the story of him coming out to lend a hand and thought what's taking him so long to get there. He walks outside and sees the guys service truck is there but no one around then sees two eyes pop up out of the dumpster. He's dumpster diving.

There's a dude I watch on YT that dumpster dives. He's in the Atlantic City area and goes to the casinos and construction sites. He gets all sorta good stuff to scrap or sell on FBMP.

I'm too big for dumpsters and if they are on private property nevermind. The one i found on the street(public) and grabbed a few things on top of. The cops came n told me to get lost.

FAR too many scrappers, that know the construction CO's or workers take home scrap themselves around here.

I've come across a dozen local scrappers houses. Even the guy who parked close to my door, at the store LOL I'm sure they know where i live as well ;) I was just at the yard the other day for a light run and this one dude was evil eyeing me the whole time.
