Around here(& the scrappers i watch) cars are usually lower/same or close to shred(all basic generic common steel stuff), other steel types are usually worth more! Yard i went to last fall, shred n cars were exact same price but they only had one other steel type, rotors and no other steel categories. Some places will have cast iron or auto engines category. Some places/yards prep/prepared is only 1/4" thick and they differ by oversize for their various categories place to place. This is why I've not taken in any of the higher value metals i have, partly to not wanting to call 7 or so places n deal with bitchy office chics LOLThese are the current ferrous per ton rates at the yard I'm going to use.
Looks like about .10 - .11 cents per pound depending on what you have.
I'm assume scrap cars would be in the $230/ton category. Is that correct?
From their website:
We will grade 3 types of Ferrous Metals: (Weights in Net Tons)
- Misc. Iron: $230.00 (farm machinery, appliances [compressors separate], tin, cast, etc.)
- Prepared Iron: $210.00 (3ft x 18in or shorter, 1/8 inch or thicker, no cast iron)
- #1 Prep Plate & Structural: $220.00 (consists of I-Beams & plate steel, 3ft long x 18in wide x 18in tall or smaller, ¼ inch or thicker)
You also need to ask them what one is for rotors cause usually that is a higher rate n it's own category as well. Plus then there will be the ignorant bad mood employee, that don't know jack bout their own job n is in a rush.
Be specific and ask them what is their vehicle rate.
