Nice is just in the eye of the beholder man. I'm happy for you but I'm also proud of you for sticking with it and cranking through the project! These things aren't easy because if they were everybody would do it
Yeah I agree really nice stuff like yours everyone can appreciate though. I have to do what I can and try to make it decent. To me its gonna be awesome. Its fun till it isn't and I still enjoy most of it so I plug away when I can.

I did say a "few months" in my first post on this thread. I should edit that to years. Or in months we are around 40. :ROFLMAO:
This might take a few months. Hope no one is in a hurry for posts and pics. We work in our spare time as $ allows.
I don't get up off that floor near as fast or get down near as fast unless I'm falling. :larf: My knees are not done but I can tell they will be what goes first. So the build goes on just slower than 20 years ago.

In my defense I've had many life things happen that have slowed this project lately but I don't plan to quit it. Trying to roof my house doing a lot of wood replacement and pressure washing the old loose paint for a new paint job. Lost my x father-in-law Monday, out of nowhere a blood clot in his leg killed him right after he got to work. He was a long time fishing buddy hated to see him go.

Hey I purchased some roll bar padding for this truck. Mainly wanted something for around my head. I got this SFI 45.1 rated stuff and its quite hard. I was wanting to use it in this area where its not straight long pieces. What do you do? I don’t see any chance of bending it. I could cut it but it would look like ass probably and doesn’t that ruin the SFI rating or no? And one last question. Do you just use the two sided tape it comes with to hold in place? If not what does a good job zip ties?

OP - why not consult NHRA Rule book for specs and directions to answer your question?

Get the large zip ties not those cheap little hardware store things get the ones that are 3/8" wide and use those. Obviously roll the connector portion of zip tie up and around so you're not going to cut your hands on it or hit your head on it. I use the double-sided tape that came on the padding combined with the zip ties and you would be surprised, you could form that stuff around some pretty good corners. Just takes good planning and use a sanding drum to notch it out.

Using your advise I went to the NHRA webpage titled 2024 NHRA Rulebook now available | NHRA that took me to this page titled https://www.nhra.com/news/2023/2024-nhra-rulebook-now-available
2024 NHRA Rulebook now available. To which I scrolled past this image that said it was free download.

The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
I'll check around I'm sure its available somewhere. That would answer the one part about cutting it I would think.
I just thought someone might have some good tips on what they learned trying to put this stuff in their ride. I wonder if heating it makes it more pliable. I don't have a clue how much heat it can take before damage though.

That sounds like what I figured on the two sided tape. As hot as it gets here I didn't think it would stay long. As for the sanding drum, NHRA OK with modifying it? I just know they wont let you touch a transmission shield. I doubt I will ever be somewhere they would give me shit over roll bar padding but I was going to try and follow their regulations. I will see how it does I was going to try to make one piece follow the bar up by my shoulder to above my head like a upside down L shape. Guess if it breaks I will know not to try that again. :larf:

While there seems to be no mention of how to affix the SFI 45.1 padding, I was told at a track once that using zip ties was a no-no? I had one piece fall off and with no two- sided tape available I used zip ties. They let me run, but I could not come back without that piece getting new tape. FTR, that is the only time two-sided tape failed me.

Seattle Portland and Woodburn never said anything about the zip ties on that style of padding in the 55. And as far as the sanding, you just use that for the contours where you have a fitting angle so it doesn't look like you hacked it up with an axe.

Thanks for the info. Have you bent any of this stuff into a cage like I was describing at the end of post #309? This stuff sure doesn't feel like it will make that short of a bend.
That is crazy not allowing a zip tie. I suppose it is because someone possibly pulling them too tight taking the proper amount of cushioning away from them? Either way I would rather have something holding the padding there securely than to rely of tape that may fail as yours did leaving no protection in the event of a wreck.
I may try some of these to secure mine.
If they suck I'm doing the big zip ties I suppose.

I have never tried to do ANY outside bend with it. An inside bend is a little more doable, but I just trim it as tight as possible to a bend, and match it as close as possible with another piece. Not sure why that one piece of mine came free? All the other pieces are still hanging tough as nails.

The rules only require the padding on inside edges anywhere your helmet can get to while completely strapped into the car.

No I probably didn't explain right. I'm trying to do the inside of the bend where my helmet will be. I was just thinking I could use one 3ft piece starting above my head and curve it down beside my left shoulder. Then separate pieces for the bar above the door. Ill give the tape a chance I suppose if it comes loose its getting something more permanent. I stuck it in there and started bending it carefully. I got it pretty close and the wax paper that protects the sticky started tearing. I decided I will try tomorrow evening with the sticky tape exposed. I had to go dig a grave and couldn't keep messing with it.

Do you do that small brace? There wont be much contact area for the sticky tape to hold on it.

Thank you again for the input.

Any updates?
Well ya got me. I haven't actually done much of anything but stick that roll bar padding in there and it didn't stick for shit. I put zip ties on it hoping that it would eventually stick and I could remove them. That SFI stuff is stiff and it didn't like being bent that much. After I did that I did a little wiring and I do mean a little. I put some plugs on the tail lights and the wire for the data log button that is mounted on the back of the truck.

I know its nothing but I would just get to a point I wanted to do anything just to say I made progress. :sad2: Not to make excuses but I did say I was trying to roof my house doing a lot of work on the place for a new paint job. I did get the house painted finally but I still need one section of roof cap to finish my carport. Long story on some custom bent pieces taking time to get made. I never roofed a house much less with metal and with my normal work and all I just have been loaded down. I am so sick of not making progress on it but I just had to take care of other priorities.

Is kind of funny you asked now though as my brother and I discussed yesterday getting back on it and putting the new transmission in it today. He had been pretty wrapped up with his own stuff hes working on moving into his new place and trying to make that race they won. This weekend we will make the big part of his move and that should free him up and my place is almost done getting revamped. All I am saying is hopefully this will get back to being a priority.
