Scrapping Kinda Sucks

Yesterday i get there and after chatting with the demo guy. He said i could pull any alum siding/ducts out of his piles(He loads one of his dumpsters with metal for a shred load. Doesn't sort). I've not touched them out of respect and didn't even ask. Not wanting to cause problems because I'm just grateful for all the other stuff I've gotten. But he offered and I thanked him.

Went to bend over and fold up this piece of alum duct AND pinched a nerve in my back. Done it before and sometimes, it takes awhile to work loose. Sat around in my truck and would try to stretch or move a bit but didn't get it loose. So i pushed myself a bit, to get something else for the day at least and came home early. Wanted to make a small profit, since i only barely managed to load that alum duct to cover my fuel cost(not heavy, just long & crushed. Why i was gonna fold it up).

Just about an hour ago i started to feel better and think I should be good for tomorrow. Tempted to go out and do some light prep work for a bit. It's not far so fuel isn't too much and if i knock out 2 hrs of prep, then tomorrow i could get more. Also I'd hit the store to make the trip worth it.

Really wanted to get a good lead this weekend, as it'll be coming to an end soon But I've done pretty good on this job. Happy with what I've got either way :)

I picked up my 116 kw generator yesterday
They spread more stuff out for the next one . Saw some decent parts I want and some sort of electrical box that is full of copper probably 200 to 300 lbs . Might go cheap ,no old beer though.

Hell yea, with the price of copper now, that box will be a home run if you can buy it 'right'.. Any idea what it might go for?

This vid is by a guy I've been watching for +/- 10 years on YT. I initially found out about him when I was buying storage units and his name came up on a search about the topic. I met/talked with him a few times when I was selling at the flea market, and he is a solid guy. This is his take on scrapping nowadays. If you have 20 minutes to kill, give it a look.

You're not doing it right.....from what I've read

I've done it to where i had the scrapman dropping off multiple heavy canvas mail totes- and i filled them with copper and brass and i call them back for pickup, they show up with box truck with lift gate inside....in the box is floor scale. Either payment is made in back of truck, or if its large enough, you get to jump into cab of truck. I had it to where he came downstairs via the freight elevator to my office....

I have t-shirts that say "Citi Scrap Mongo Madness".....

Ask your scrap buddie what is scrap value of 1ft of 500 mcm copper lead is? I cashed in hundreds of feet. Lol.....300 mcm, 750 mcm......

Was nice paydays.

I would call and say "I need 3 totes" Or I "would need 10 totes on site for job." Will call when ready for pickup.. ....Next m9rning, box truck pulls up with bunch of totes.....

Hey scraptards- look into auctions.....

Straight up facts
No kidding I bought a 115 kw Knoler generator at one for $260 at least 300 lbs of copper in it . The problem is it's only got around 500 hours on it and it's never been outside. 460 ford with a turbo and run on Natural gas. Probably cost 30 k when new I might use it back at the pond . Deals are out there all over . Bought a 1000 gallon new septic tank same place $340 they are 2k at the stores .

If you are getting septic tanks that cheap you should stock up and buy a backhoe.

I doubt another one will come along that cheap again . But that and the generator are good pieces to have for next year when I want to build a house back by the pond . I will go solar and use the generator as a backup.

Fifteen! Mobile homes are Gone!

Dang that was A lot of work. But i did pretty good. No way I was able to get all of it(prob not even half) but i got enough. Tried to get another guy in on it but he was too good for a bit of scrapping LOL Tho i did trade some of the tools/stuff i got for a bit of help.

Got lots of free stuff. Nothing super great but plenty of stuff to use, trade, sell and give away. Well did get two Snap-On 1/2" ratchets, normal and XL. Stuff i can think of atm. Three hand-carts(two need fixed), few alum ladders(only 1 or 2 good rest scrap), plenty of random tools(most i already have but good to have extras for scrap work), some decent and some meh. Got a small 6x4 alum shed(needs floor but fit in my truck standing up). Basic consumable stuff like trash bags or bleach(obviously not any food or drinks, well tons of plant-food for my neighbor that grows peppers). Prob like $20-30 in change. Even got a bit of Gold & Silver jewelry to scrap. Just a lot of random stuff, like decorative knives or fireworks. Pretty sure I'm forgetting some things, as it's been almost two months and just stashed most it.

Course I was like 3rd or 4th in line to pick, so there was much better to be had.

For scrap, I pretty much focused on collecting and staying ahead of the demo guy. Hard to do sometimes because of poor communication, waiting for power & gas to be unhooked or random demo order changes. Only took in a bit so far and piled it up mostly. I'll start hauling it in, well right after i build some wood sides(some of the wood i got from this job).

IDK how much weight yet but i got a towering pile of stacked alum siding. Plenty of wire, mostly romex but some better and meh, bit of alum wire too. I'll sort stash and strip most the good wire this winter. Not a ton of copper but there was some here n there. Pile of furnace blowers, those things were a pita to get whole so just took the best bits. I mostly ignored steel but got a couple loads prob once stuff is cleaned up. Kept telling them, I'm not trying to step over dollars to pick up pennies. Had to prioritize the best stuff but some places were so nasty, i didn't wanna go into them.

Some days i got $50 in scrap and others over $200. I mean it is nice to start or leave when you want and while it was more steady/profitable(but tons more work) than cursing for scrap, still bit random. Pretty sure the park guy was charging them some for my labor. I did one paid job for him and never got my $10. But otherwise i didn't mind giving them a quick hand, tho they did try to push some of their work on me. Not successfully, part of why some of my days were short or reasons for delays. I'm nice but not a sucker. Even tho i didn't get that $10(orig asked for a vise), my helper got two tool boxes he really wanted and helped me for a few hrs extra. Plus he did most the work for that quick job. And i learned to not work for them ;) Park/demo guy prob saved three or four dumpsters, alum siding crumples n takes up alot of space.

Wow that was longer than expected. Better that it dragged out cause i got more. Still it was 6 days a week for two months work, eat, laundry/clean and rest/sleep. I am pretty slow and could of got a lot more if in better shape. Was super hot in the beginning and had to take frequent AC breaks in my truck.

What a Fucking drama fest! I'm not a therapist or getting paid, leave me alone. Good scrap but glad it's over and i don't gotta see them daily. Might be more in the future but meh, this kinda inspired to just get a job(after i get caught up).

Post is long enough, sure I'm forgetting some :ROFLMAO:

Oh one trailer i was told the gas was off. Cut the iron line outside with my sawzall and nope Not off. Really glad i didn't start with the furnace, normally use my angle grinder for that. Disks are cheaper than sawzall blades. It'd deff been a fire and I'd prob of got burnt good.

Hurt my foot(something in the arch), knee, bumped my head or shit fell on it and pinched a nerve in my back(that week Sucked!!!). Few cuts but didn't get electrocuted.
