Scrapping Kinda Sucks

We got 10 cent deposit for carbonated drinks(taken in a few hundred scrapping so far). But i got 3ish totes of non deposit cans. And checked with my local yard, it's ok for me to crush them. So I'll prob end up with half a tote, when ever i get round to that. Also 50 cents a lb for that yard.

Warmer weather i don't dig thru trash much  but once it gets cold enough.

This dude waves me down, hey you scrap, I got some stuff for yah. So I tell him sure let me park and i"ll check it out. He says $20 and I'm like, make a MP ad and someone will buy it. LOL sry I'm a hobby scrapper and blocking traffic have a nice night.

Like 4th person to try n sell me scrap. Sorry i don't carry cash ;)

From what you've said before, the area isn't too good. You never know, coulda been they were trying to set you up to get robbed. Good job keeping your head on a swivel - so to speak.

That area was fine but i doubt what he had was worth it. Most areas i scrap are decent but the other scrappers come from the bad areas.

Still it also occurred to me, couple of the past times a guy tried to sell me some copper n stuff. Could of been stolen and they didn't want to scrap it/take it in themselves.

Always cracks me up that they think, I'd drive around with hundreds in cash or a scrapper would have lots of cash :ROFLMAO:

Tell them you're a non profit and donating will make them feel better!

A few weeks ago I read a story on FB, so take it for what it's worth.

A guy bought 'copper' from someone to scrap and it turned out to be something else. It was a tote full of stripped wire. The buyer showed a pic of what he bought and it looked like copper to me (it was the right color).. I wouldn't know the difference between actual copper or what appears to be copper.

Gotta scratch it with something, use a file or rub it on the concrete. Might of been coated alum but the weight would also be a give away. I suspect someone painted steel wire.

For example copper coated jumper cables are lighter than copper wire ones.

Fun fact, they use to sell copper coated alum wire as "RACE WIRE" :ROFLMAO: I even used some alum stereo wire, to drop a few lbs for a long starter wire but it corrodes fast ;)

Had a couple recent random clean-ups. Just stopped at those places for something small and a dude was like, i got more if you want it. Couple cool dudes :) I helped them out with cleaning up and they helped me get some good scrap. The most recent i got an alum v6 engine(plus other scrap). Gotta call the yard to see if there is price difference bare block vs assembled shortblock.

Take the time to tear it down better money

Monday was payday.
Wheels were $1.50/lb., down $0.02 since my last trip.
36 wheels/980 lbs.
$1,470 cash money. :)

Keep forgetting to ask the yard but sure i know the answer. Got a set of alum center(5 star) and steel barrel wheels. Not 3 piece bolt-together type but some kind of formed/pressed. They were chromed and peeling on the alum or rusted barrels.

Not sure if i should cut the centers out. Might do one and then weigh it, to see if the other 3 are worth the effort.

Barrels gotta be over 50%, prob more like 70-80% of the weight. So I'm, sure they will be shred at most and not worth cutting the tires of AND deff not worth selling. 15's with 4 lug fox pattern.

I toss all my wheels on the big aluminum wheel pile by myself. I don't think anyone would even notice if I threw a wheel like yours on the pile. (I personally wouldn't do it)

Nah even if i think the yards are shorting me some(weight), I'd not do that. Unless i didn't care and wanted to possibly burn that yard. Still even then, two wrongs don't make a right. Cameras everywhere anyways, they'd figure it out.

This one yard i go to(no outside weight screen), they always seem to alter my weight, if it appears I have less clean steel(bit of plastic). I know they do but don't care bout $10ish bucks. Tho I won't forget it and will deff not be taking any Large nonferrous loads to them. 100lbs of alum is a bigger loss than steel ;)

For example i got a pile of alum to clean up this fall, should be a full load and I'll be going to the yard with weight display i can see.

Dragged these 3 furnaces out to finally tear em down. But then i got random help moving some stuff and had to put em off to the side until that was dealt with. Been meaning to do em, just never done any so no clue how long it took. Turns out they are actually pretty fast, tore em apart Saturday. And good thing just got two more last night. Unloaded and I'll tear into them tonight, n get all 5 out of here this week :)

The place I go has no screen to see weights at all. That said, I weigh every wheel so I know how much I should have on my ticket. In all the times I've been there, the difference hasn't been more than like 10 lbs., and it's usually in my favor. It don't get more honest than that.

I understand that you guys tend to have a bit of everything in the truck when you go. It would probably be a PITA, but If you can, weight it all before you go, and compare your tickets to your own calculations..

I don't know anything about furnaces, but they do look heavy. I definitely wouldn't want to drag one around. Hopefully all that work paid off.

Nice! The area depends, people around here will rip you off in a heartbeat! They got loads of drug addicts bringing in stuff nonstop.

I usually try n keep it to 3 categories but most the time it's 100% steel and that would be a pita to weight all that junk. Diff places use diff technics. One you empty your container on their scale. Another they just deduct what they think the container weights. For example i'd have two medium totes and they took off 10lbs. Just depends what direction I'm heading.

I use a dolly(handcart) to move large items around my home, was my dads :) Loading and unloading is easy, if you lean it onto the tailgate and slide it in. I always instruct the random people that help, they seem to always think we'll pick it up. Nope why work hard if you don't gotta, it's already broken. Most large items are tall enough or you can use a step up, like a metal car ramp. Unloading, i just back into the yard and roll it out :ROFLMAO:

Also I may not have endurance/stamina But i can move heavy shit. I'm stocky ;) My guns are pumping back up from doing it regular. Built the muscle working out in my younger years but i could bench 200lbs in Jr High.

Didn't get those two tore down yet, got a tip and working on some other scrap collection :)
