Scrapping Kinda Sucks

Saw a washer on a back road when running in a load today, fully loaded. Stoked, that's my fuel cost covered, if i got it. On my way back bout 1/4 mile from it, here comes this dude with it almost entirely poking up past his cab. No straps, hope it fell out LOL

Like I said I seen a washer striped of the shell it could have been folded down and stacked .
Do you carry a drill with a bit set to take thing apart

The only stripped washers/dryers I seen, were ones people, took apart to remove from their basement by themselves. Frist i was like WTF but later a guy i know did that and gave me the parts. [edit] if you check their can, it's prob full of parts LOL I throw away the washer tubs, mostly plastic and non-metal weighted. Nut is so corroded on not worth it.

I drag them home to take apart later, no way I'm gonna do it on a narrow side of road or in someones driveway and 90% of the time it's late.

I had no room, 1 steel bathtub, 3 grills, an exercise machine, trailer fenders, firepit, 4 dog crates, a wheelbarrow tub, 2 bikes, 4 chairs, tons of poles n other random metal, even had a kitchen sink. I was loaded to the max and used all my straps. No room!

I took a load of shred in a few days ago and it’s paying $220 a ton, that there is a $150 load.

Nice! Was $200 here but dropped to $180 a couple weeks ago. I expect it's from the influx of spring scrap and mass amount of scrappers, yards are busy.

Been meaning to snap some pictures, of all the stuff i got with a DPF that i tossed(oops thought it was a muffler). Intake is like stainless or something, turbo manifold junk and various good condition pipes n bits. I also got the two cats, deff a full-size diesel truck that someone did some upgrades to.

Been some interesting stuff lately but busy AF!

Got a new flatbed cable hook LOL

Ton of good steel round tubing to use for projects and some ok large box as well(might use for a new mailbox stand). Like every night lately good steel, that i gotta hang onto LOL Got enough to make some stands for a portable fence with tarps to hide some junk maybe.

Last night as i was heading home, passed these guys setting out a 6' section of antenna tower(i was out of the trash area, as well). Turns out was only a small part of a large one that went down and they just cut up. Dish, Large alum antenna, camera and light. So heavy duty steel and lotta wires. My research says it was prob for ham radio as one of the coax lines was multi-strand center copper with copper braided. Plus the large antenna. Only noticed the wire unloading today, i was just tired n trying to load up that heavy thing, on top of my fortunately light load(took bikes out, then put on top).

Even got a bit of Gold and Silver :) Not a lot but worth more than a trip of shred for me. Well depending what the prices are when i have enough to be worth sending in.

Lotta interesting scrap finds lately, know I'm forgetting some but been going nonstop

Oh I went to a new scrap yard and they ripped me off!

Receipt says shred is at $165 a ton and I only took 480lb of shred(less than my 600-700lb estimate, they may have got me there too) BUT they paid me $35, should of been $39.

And I had to go thru all this junk, fingerprint, photo, plate and id. I asked if they also need a DNA sample LOL kinda expected them to hand me a cup. Talked to an old scrapper, that i stopped to see if he needed help loading a fridge and he said they photo everytime!

Even tho they pay, less, I saved on fuel n time instead of going to one of the regular yards and then that area. But fuck that place!

To the right guy that buy those DPF they can pay good money but im sure scrap yards try taking advantage of the guy that don't know what he has

Now that I am semi retired ( ha ha) I have all kind of time on my hand Monday and Tuesday I removed 20 tires off rims 4 of those are aluminum took the tires for county wide recycling.
Its time to fill the trail for a scrap run between rain drop .
I go to one yard and they have me on file so I don't need to do all the rectal scanning and they seam fair and give a recipe with a break down of your scrap with price and weight

Can you read the numbers on them? To make sure you're getting a fair price, you're gonna want to look up exactly what they are. The codes/numbers will tell you that.

Some of the guys on FB can tell what they are just by looking at them.

Not looked them up yet, did for another i have. But yah after i took in my C4 cats, years ago and got hardly anything. Figured I'd look more into these days ;)

To be honest, none of these yards give me a great feeling of trust(FYI readers). I get they are out to make money but i kinda understand, why some scrappers try the tricks they do. Not that I'm dishonest to do anything like that. But it deff takes away, that extra effort to clean the metal as good.

I mean when i take in rotors and I know the scale swings 20lbs, that's an entire rotor if they give me the low end. Sat there n watched it go back n forth 20lbs the entire time, more than once.

Gonna take in some alum gutters and a alum gazebo today, we'll see how that goes. Bringing tools incase i gotta cut them down or w/e, already did somewhat but gotta be prepared for curveballs. Well I still got a million screws to remove from the gazebo, this morning LOL

Was gonna take in a tote of extension cord, double insulation type wire. But the yard i asked weren't paying much for that type and i know others pay more(one further yard double a lb). I'll ask the yard I'm going to today what they pay.

Actually idk bout the gazebo. Brought a less than 3' section in to size the allen screws and it also has steel nutserts(up n down it, so too many cuts). So not worth the effort to clean some of it but some just bolts on, tho that part was extrusion and the bulk is gonna be old-sheet from my understanding.

If i do get dirty/breakage or a lower price. May not be worth removing the screws from those pieces and just leave them in for more weight. This is the part i hate bout scrapping, sometimes when you try to do the right thing, you can just screw yourself LOL

I'll have to ask the yard before i waste my time. And that is a factor when you have a hard time sleeping. Woke up too early but i couldn't stay up longer. Gonna try n nap but I'm not setting an alarm, need what sleep i can get. So that could mess up my todays schedule. Got a pick up later, I planned to do after my yard run. And yesterday i was burning the candle at both ends, to get a run prepped & in, then prep todays(had an unplanned pick-up as well). I'm taking Sat off n ain't doing shit!

[edit] Air chisel prob knock em out but far more effort or time than i have today.

Yesterday loaded the car hauler full 3 boat outdrives and a old snowmobile trailer and section of antenna tower just cleaning the yard up.
I'm going to the yard that has a magnet my back is not up to the unload we shall see

Mo
I hear you on the shady yards.i have small totes to keep ferrous from non ferrous that I use and I sort heavy from other metals if I have to roll the scales multiple time im good with it .
It's good to hear your doing better
Most yards are run by jews, what do you expect

Finished up my son’s siding project. Stored it at one of my storage buildings each day until we were done stripping it off so I could take it all in at one time with my dump truck. Took 560 pounds of aluminum siding in Wednesday.

Just took in 127lb of gutters/siding/flashing/downspouts(all siding). And of course it's down 5 cents from last week LOL was $0.70lb now 0.65lb. Then 30lb reg alum 0.60lb and 600lb shred 0.09lb.

Glad to see others are getting $220 for shred, Flint area n surrounding just sucks! $180 and $165

If i didn't have a bill to pay Mon, I'd of kept the alum hoarded but oh well. I had a bag of wire in the pass seat, just incase it wasn't enough.

My pick-up after the yard load, turned into a double. When guy a few houses down saw me :) another washer n dryer. I gotta get tearing those things apart, got almost 20 now. If i had a trailer I'd be tempted to just load em up.

With higher gas prices, I'll slow my collection down some and work on processing what i got. Should have bout two months of bill money coming from something shortly but like to keep 1 month in reserve always. Well it'd turn into my summer taxes LOL

FYI the alum GM hood i cleaned up, all the steel was glued on. Hood latch, strut-rod ball and studs for hinges. Just took a few wacks with my mini sledge. I thought the latch was riveted but after grinding a few off, noticed they weren't close to it really. So just hit it a few times n popped inward.
