Scrapping Kinda Sucks

Also also I suggest taking in only a few categories at once, even of the same metal types.

Makes things simpler, especially if they are busy. They may even try to lump everything of one metal type, in one lower category/rate.

Best to take a bit in sometime they are slower or ask for a tour/examples of their sorting/categories/grades.

Seems wheel alum(not chromed ones) and extrusion are best alum prices these days.
Yea, I been on a shopping spree the past few days.
I think I have 24 wheels behind the house now.
My chick thinks I have a problem. :)
More wheels coming hopefully tomorrow.

Well I feeling you did well at 10 to 15 $ each at scrap value have you looked into company that sell oem rims see if they buy from private

Careful some of those stock 15's are pretty light, my 15x7 Sonoma wheels are like 15lb(good for low HP sleeper). Then you have to factor, fuel, time and disposal. Why i don't buy any really, most the time I'd break even cause I'm just not super close to much(closer scrappers faster to get them as well).

Just got two chromed/alum 24's given to me, even tho lower rate still pretty heavy :)

You won't find em these days BUT I've bought blem or w/e alum wheels off ebay for less than current scrap prices. Knew scrap would go up but a few I'm gonna keep for decoration(bachelor life yo).

My average cost is $11.18 per wheel.

There are 'core' buyers around that buy in bulk, but I believe they're only interested in people that can fill a trailer. I doubt they'd have any interest in the pile I have.

The Blazer 15s are 21 lbs each. I paid $45 for them (4), so I made about $43.
I bought a set of Buick Lesabre 15s today. Paid $30 for the 4. They are 19 lbs. Profit $48.

One way or the other I gotta get a tire machine here soon.
I missed a couple on MP, the damn things sell as soon as they're put up.

The one above is like $350, has good reviews, and weighs only 110 lbs. It runs strictly off air so there's no electric motors inside it to worry about. It will be left outside behind the house covered by a tarp.

I was told that there is a way to quickly remove chrome plating.
Once done, the wheel looks like hell, but it will scrap at full price.
That said, I haven't looked into it. The info is out there though.
Those 24s will be heavy as hell even without the chrome. 🤑

Cool I'll make note of it and look into it. I'm still getting my ass kicked with other stuff atm.

I always calculate fuel into my runs, try to add things up as i got but once I'm well into profit it's no longer a concern. Like I used just under 6 gals of fuel at $3.70 a gal last night, bout $20+ in fuel and deff got over 1000lbs of junk. My estimate is safely over $100 in scrap, then two good enough to sell 3" Flowmasters. Also then there is time, i was on the road for about 6hrs, just took 2hrs to mostly unload and sort(lotta small random stuff) and will have several more hours into processing. So min wage is deff better. Gotta factor all cost and time!

Good thing I'm not trying to be max efficient, read this the other day. When researching. if it's worth taking anything off that restaurant grill. A reply to someone else that got one sim.

"If time‘s money just bring it in as is. If you just do this to make some extra money and have enough time, take it into parts. But sometimes, even if time is money, some items can be very interesting to be taken into parts to look how they work and how they look inside, but that grill isnt very interesting"

And honestly, if i was closer to the yards, I'd be more about quick turnaround for most larger things but to max my trip/fuel cost, I break alot of things down. Tho that grill, just gonna grab the SS feet and set aside the cast iron griddles(not a large plate but SEVERAL small griddles). I'll toss it in my bed and haul it in soon, with the fryer.

Your doing it right collect enough to make it worth the trip .
I have my bank account behind my barn also.
The 15s are not worth any resale tires are more money to get 15 people want 17 and up .that 24 will bring good money .
Money is money if its not worth it then why are so many doing it

I'm never one to downplay something to try n keep it for myself, many do that. I'm just good at MATH :)

There are some who don't need much money, they get FREE food or other(FYI i get none of that stuff). Some do not have a choice, drug addicts or felons/sex offenders that can't get real jobs and some are just retired/on SS(keeping active).

The ones who make GOOD money, have connections/normal pick-ups, know the great spots or w/e. Got a good system to not waste time or fuel. If only i lived closer to the yards, I'd same a lot of time unloading n reloading. But like most times, my haul is a cluster fuck and needs cleaned up and sorting/separating. Sure i could do some of that at the yard like some but then I'd be at the yard working with min tools and waiting for the diff lines or w/e. Rather do it at home and take in better loads.

I knew a guy who'd make A LOT more at his job picking up OT(was always plenty) than flipping cars but he still did it for fun :)

Saw an old guy in a electric car, i beat him to a box of wire LOL Guys like that are what i call "treasure hunters", they do it for fun but only really take the best stuff. Not long ago saw another guy in a real nice truck, with nice painted tonu cover, he was again just out looking for treasure in a nice area.

I see a lot of druggy types zipping around in non-trucks, they also looking for the best stuff only.

Some areas, there isn't much competition, most mine are. I just started a new to me spot and it seems good so far but now I'm starting to see more scrappers there.

Watch the YT vids, i see dude spend half an hour edited down taking apart something for less than $2. I do some of the same kinda time sinks worthless stuff but i can do it inside at my table :)

IN FACT, if you plan to collect unemployment for the full term. Try scrapping yourself, only then will you find out if it's worth it for you.

[edit] Also i kinda like scrapping and if i can make it work, maybe I'll do it for awhile But at this rate I'll prob break. My arms are constantly sore and hands make it hard to sleep good. So i gotta take time off and that makes it hard to pay my bills with scrap alone, so far.

Most the other scrappers i saw last night were just out, zipping round looking for large stuff or good types of metal. I filled up on small stuff putting around the dense neighborhoods. Only found a water heater and two grills at the end(straps for the win).

Take apart enough BS and you figure out what is worth grabbing that you can find goodies inside n take apart quick enough.

[edit] One dude, was being too loud, saw him toss in a AC unit around 10pm. Then later he was breaking off a ceiling fan blades, stopped in the middle of the road with his door open. Now if later in the AM, I'll stop in the road for a quick grab. But if i find more or gotta do work n gonna be there longer, I'll pull off.

I hear you take that ac unit cut it up now you have copper in the coils and the compressor cut it open now you have a motor worth more money .
I have small totes for aluminum and load truck for heavy in the back and inside scale in the front of truck like aluminum.
Makes for fast unload

Brother in law was into military vehicles,he did parades ,reenactment stuff.Got divorced and relocated to Texas and sold off his 1/2 track, tank and armored assault vehicle.that he had stored in my long barn. Had left some N O S spare pieces that he told me i can scrap them .A cpl trans/transfer case,front/rear diffs and and a turret ring gear. I've not scrapped much stuff other then some batteries and an occasional cat. Its like Semi truck sized pieces that il use the log truck to load. What grade of material would this stuff be?

Heavy cast and that bring good money for clean metal no plastic. If you look up it might be 150 to 200$ a ton

Stopped at this one dudes house, saw a printer(not interested 95% plastic n a million screws), a shop vac(didn't notice motor gone already) and b-ball hoop(not really taken apart).

Talked to the guy a min, he really wanted me to take the hoop. I was like, I'll bring my sawzaw if i come back this way n get the metal later(leave plastic base) But then he was like, no you take it all or nothing and got kinda mad at the idea I'd leave behind trash(what he said). Dude it's your fucking trash! So i was like ok have a nice night, told him to try making a MP ad if he wanted it to be USED(looked at me like i was a dick, he wanted it gone) and left LOL some people!

Dude no one wants your old b-ball pole and plastic stand. It's on the curb n some other scrapper is gonna just cut it n leave the plastic. He tried to be like I'm hoping someone could use it. Because he wanted it all gone, knowing his trash wouldn't take it LOL

I'm not gonna ever stop at that house again. He had a C3 on a trailer and before i climbed in my truck, said nice car got a 77 myself. Most assume I'm a bum since i scrap or because I'm nice that I'm an idiot.

In the new area I've been hitting, people are happy when i take what i do. Prob because they get charged more for large/extra items. Also they are generally nicer, my area people are dicks.

Other than that douche, talked to a few nice peeps tonight as well :)

Depends on the yard, the local ones I've been too only have two grades, shred and rotors. I need to call a few others, as I've hoarded all my heavy thick steel/iron. The YTers i watch, their yards have prepared steel 1/8" or 1/4" thick min. It's less than rotors but still higher than shred. One of the yards I've gone to, guy told me all the other types are lower than shred atm, so they just pay shred LOL

^^^ Yea, BOOT.. that dude sounds like a prick.

I got 4 more wheels today.
17s off a new Ford Ranger.
Heavy, like f-150 wheels.
I'm running outta room. :)

I've passed on most and scrapped a few of them. The pole itself and two small rods that connect to the base are like $2-3 in scrap. I don't even wanna mess with the backboard, took two so far, one was a pita and not even bother to mess with the other yet.

Dudes acts like it's Gold LOL
