Scrapping Kinda Sucks

House Bill 5234, Michigan not in effect yet. According to my research but not clear on when it will. I assume some yards are just gonna stop right away but others up until the last min.

Just read it's not effective YET! And it's $15 for a scrap title when it does LOL
So I read a reply post of the guy.
It cost him $62 for the transfer.
Good chunk of profit lost when junking a car.
He had to pay sales tax plus whatever else involved.

It's FB group, take the info for what it is.

I predict that in Michigan there will be a strange surge in random car parts cut up into random sheetmetal piles.

Oh i could be wrong on the price part as i skimmed but pretty sure it's not a law yet. From the sounds of it, to track vehicles/fight theft, plus just a money grab and if $15 then that would not be too bad. I think the transfer fee isn't too bad atm anyway, even if you told them you paid a few hundred but I'd just tell them i got paid to haul it off or got it for free LOL

I'm sure, not the brightest people are running some of these yards and the cops don't know the law either. Some will just be on the safe side, until it's passed posted in an article and they realize it's not effective yet or w/e n then they see a date.

Forgot to ask today. Errands this morning kicked my butt and then loaded up for a run. Hit the yard at rush hour and just wanted to get out of there. Seems they dropped their shred to $180, i'll have to call around n see if that other yard is still $210.

Got my butt kicked again on the ride home. 4 washers/dryers, 3 bikes, lawn mower, small compressor, some kind of pump and odd n ends. And the night isn't over, didn't finish the normal route i do today.

Was that one day's random finds, or scheduled p/u's?

Almost forgot, herd hissing and looked over to see one dude(scrapper not worker) breaking up an AC unit in the scrap yard LOL
I look around and whistle when some mysterious gas leaks out of something.. :ROFLMAO:

Just the kinda normal areas i hit for today/tonight, so random finds but planned driving around. Still i was pretty tired n like w/e i find on my path home is good enough. Found a lot more than expected that early. One pair of the washer/dyer i pulled up as dude was rolling them out, same for two of the bikes.

I got home early enough to unload before the noise would be too much, ate and then went back out for a bit. Only leftovers by then, as i figured. Like +$20-ish in mostly steel and used almost $10 in fuel, for the 2nd run. Prob should of stayed home but never know unless you go out.

BOOT, the FB group I read is >> Scrap Metal Scrappers

Lots of good info there, but there's some whack jobs too.

Being band new to this, I take it all with a grain of salt. I been learning by recognizing who is genuine, and who is a lying a-hole.

Just grabbed a pile of alum gutters(not much weight and very bulky/nosey) and this old weird wood type smoker grill. Would of been too noisy last night for either. But i had to make a grocery run and woke up early(unloaded), so before the store(same direction) i grabbed both.

I'll cut up n smash the gutters down to a reasonable size later, took up the whole bed and was fun getting that stupid grill on top of them LOL

This sucks! Warmed up too fast!

Mid to high 60's gets me sweaty and this 70's is kicking my butt alone. Won't slow me down as much as snow but almost! 1hr and my shirt is soaked! Need a shower before i fold my laundry, yuck!

Wednesday I answered a bunch of aluminum wheel ads on MP offering $10 each.
A few people answered and I wound up buying 9 aluminum wheels for $102.
Most have shit tires on them I gotta cut off.

2 18" VWs / $20
4 17" GM truck / $50
1 16" GM truck / $12
1 15" GM truck / $10
1 20" Mercedes / $10

Guessing I have about 200 lbs. of wheels.
Clean wheels are at $1.03/lb. where I go.
Nothing lifechanging, but I doubled up. :)

I'll look once in awhile for wheels to buy n scrap(nothing local, scrappers are all over MP, Very competitive around here). Seen a few too far ads, usually priced bout scrap n terrible wheels. I'd just messaged that they should scrap em, then see the ad go down LOL

Only found two alum wheels so far, one while recently scrapping this winter and the other Several years ago(still got it out in the barn, in my rainy day scrap collection). But i got a few sets of mostly stock alum wheels(rollers) i could scrap. Was glad to see that the car we just dragged out, had all four alum rims but they chrome, so bit less. Honestly I know that I gotta have over 100 alum wheels, not that i wanna scrap most of them LOL(several new or worth selling sets). Bit of a wheel hoarder, as I have multiple projects and would buy cheap MP sets of Welds or w/e, over the past decade(think i have 4 pairs of Weld front runners alone).

Bought a set of chev truck 5x5 and ford pattern billet wheels, for less than scrap not long ago(fuel did kinda make it bit over scrap value). Of course I'll clean em up n use or sell them for more at least.

Think I'm gonna prep some of the bulky aluminum to take in this week, either that or i gotta drag it out back(trying to clean up my winter scrap collection) but i kinda don't wanna just move it around. Aside from gutters n misc bits of downspouts/siding/flashing. Got this pile from a gazebo after a wind storm, that needs 100 allen screws pulled. Also a crossover alum hood I think, has a few steel bits n insulation/plastic to remove. If i had the polebarn cleaned out, I'd just hoard it out there LOL

So I did more MP shopping today.
I'm picking up 9 more wheels tomorrow afternoon.

5 18" Jeeps / $75
4 15" Blazers / $45

One of the Jeep wheels is the spare, and it's supposedly brand new.. As in, it's never been driven on. I may put that one right back on MP for $100/obo as long as the tire ain't all weather cracked.

I spend a little on these ($120). The profit will be minimum $90. If I can sell the spare separate, it will be $150+.

The scrap cars, I'm gonna remove every easily accessible aluminum part I can. Accessory brackets, belt tensioners, and whatever else I can get off the engines quickly.

What would that be as far a category? Is that breakage? Or?

I'm trying to watch prices on stuff but there's so many categories I don't know that I'm reading the right one.

Well clean alum has nothing else(mostly, only a bit of non depending on yard) and dirty/breakage has no more than 40-60% of non-alum(depending on yard). Some alum things will still have a better price but lower, like painted siding or other(depending on yard). So certain things may not be worth cleaning up, if you can't get them mostly(depending on yard).

I have these alum panels, that have wood grain stickers and screws on the ends. It may not be worth the time, to even remove screws, if they give me a real low price on them cause of the stickers that i can't. I'll need to ask the yard, that i take them too and bring my driver with bit.

Several alum categories and alum is kinda down these days. I use to get $0.70 for mostly clean cast, almost two decades ago.

Same with wire, some yards don't have a 40%(two layers of insulation) category. So upgrading it and removing the outer layer, would only loose weight/money! Yard i called pays $0.60 less a lb for that type than a much father one. Worth the drive when i have enough and maybe buys from this closer yard(a middle, middle man).

I got a V6 with alum heads and front plate. Might be able to quickly clean up that front plate BUT no way I'm putting time into the heads, they will be dirty/breakage.
