Scrapping Kinda Sucks

The yard I went to has a sign saying all fuel tanks have to be removed.
But did they say, to not then put it inside the car after removal & emptied? If it's metal, then after removed it'll be easy to inspect/see if it's empty, no need to crush or cut up. Plastic, just cut it up with a sawzaw n trash. No sparks from plastic but still make sure to cut away from any metal parts of it n let it vent after yuo have a hole/opening or pump it full of water.

@BOOT Did you scrap that 89-99 Chevy truck with the seat I was interested in?
I’m building a truck that I could use one of those seats for.

Nope and have not forgot :) I was gonna try n part that truck out soon and when it's pulled, then i wanted to message you. So high chance this spring but I wanted to wait until i was actually doing it to tell you. My plans have got set back so many times and don't wanna seem like I'm stringing anyone along/talking BS, so many have done that to me. I need the front and rear suspension for the lowering kit, so it's not getting scrapped easily anytime soon.

I did check it out and it has a big hole in the fabric that was covered with a t-shirt. idk how i missed it but once i saw that last fall, i had no more interest in it and knew it was yours.

Was just telling someone how the bearings i greased about 20yrs ago on my ratty 85 TA were steel cages. I have a pretty good memory(other than when it comes to totes i put parts in but i got lots of totes the same type/color/size LOL)

Plan is after the 4x4 is scrapped this spring, to move that truck up front and start taking it apart(want it gone by next winter). I will try n get the seat pulled in spring.

Like i said it's yours, i keep my word :) just might take me awhile sometimes LOL

Thanks Boot!
Are you scrapping and 3/4 or 1 ton 73-91’s? I want the whole front suspension out of one of those trucks. The crossmember unbolts like a Crown Vic, I want to use that on a 1956 COE Ford that I have.

Let me know what else you’re scraping.
You know a lot of parts from those older trucks you’re scraping could be good ebay material. All the wire harnesses are probably worth something.
I scraped a 2003 E350, I sold every piece of wiring on that truck, dash harness , battery cables, every harness. I got close to $2k just for the wiring.

NP and nothing interesting like that, just rusty common high mileage gm trucks. Far too many scrappers, PARTER-OUTERS, car auctions and salvage yards around here, real hard to find a good deal on anything worth parting out. Pretty much everyone i knew was flipping/fixing cars growing up. Just something i never got into, like I figured out with scrapping, makes more sense to get a normal job. Especially if you wanna make an honest living LOL

I guess it can be thrown it in the car after it's cut in half.

From the yard's website..

SCRAP VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Vehicle Must have the title matching the VIN
  • Battery removed (take to the warehouse)
  • ALL Fluids drained
  • Gas tank removed AND cut in half or a 12in x 12in hole cut in it
  • NO Tires – Don’t forget the one in the trunk or underneath!
  • The vehicle CAN NOT be driven into the facility
  • Must have your own tools to remove tires if still attached

Question about titles.

Does the yard keep the titles, or do they copy them and give them back?

I found a cat buyer in St Louis but they require title(s) to the car(s) the cats come from to prove ownership before they'll buy them. If the scrapyard takes the titles, I'll lose that proof of ownership. They also accept a business licenses, but I won't have one.

In the mitten a title is required and they take the title like a sale
They even take the wrong title, well some places don't check LOL not that I'm suggesting anything like that. Just long ago i sold two 2nd gen F-bodies too a friend. One for parts n the other a shell, both with titles. He scrapped the rotted parts car and used the wrong tittle. So he had to get an assembled vehicle tittle for the shell(was later scrapped as well, after parked n torn apart).

Recently found a sweeper magnet(nothing wrong with it, works perfect) and a fullsize mop/strainer/bucket(will use for the garage, cleaning up coolant spills). That magnet will save me time, I've been very careful bout screws cause i take apart appliances n other large stuff in the driveway. But every now n then drop a screw and gotta spend a few mins looking for it. Wanted a roller type magnet for awhile but if i bought everything i occasionally need... when if i just give it time... maybe I'll get lucky and i have for many of my scrap tools :) For example I also got a meat cleaver the other day, to use for cutting up transformers(was gonna soon start to shop for a manchette, hatchet or cleaver).

A trick cut open A AC or refrigerator compressor it is now a motor so you get the money for a motor

Think you're talking bout sealed units, they sell as is or you can drain the oil and remove the outer shell. Well from the vids I've watch of the YT scrappers I normally watch. Myself it's not a concern. I don't take/pick-up anything like that, nothing with refrigerant period.

I have another title question.
We can scrap cars with the previous owner's title, correct?
Titles transfers are super expensive here ($165). That's a lot of profit to lose.
If I have to transfer titles to my name this whole deal might be a bust.

Are any of you buying cars just to scrap?
If so, how much are you paying for them?
I'm thinking $200 for small cars.
$300 - $350 for large cars and trucks/suv.

My goal is a $300 profit on each car and I'm hoping to do two cars a day.
Seems feasible, right?

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

In Indiana the title must be in your name.

Not had a problem here, long as it's signed off on. Don't hurt to call the yard before you drag it in tho.

There are SOOOOOO many people buying/hunting for vehicles to scrap around here, don't wanna fight for scraps(pun intended). Guy i know had a scrapper bug him a couple times bout his project car, then he got a notice from the city he had to move it. Aggressive scrappers someplaces(like i said dicks!). He moved it to his dads, my neighbor LOL

Wow, what a jerk off!

Scrap cars go off the price per ton
These are the current ferrous per ton rates at the yard I'm going to use.
Looks like about .10 - .11 cents per pound depending on what you have.
I'm assume scrap cars would be in the $230/ton category. Is that correct?

From their website:

We will grade 3 types of Ferrous Metals: (Weights in Net Tons)

  • Misc. Iron: $230.00 (farm machinery, appliances [compressors separate], tin, cast, etc.)
  • Prepared Iron: $210.00 (3ft x 18in or shorter, 1/8 inch or thicker, no cast iron)
  • #1 Prep Plate & Structural: $220.00 (consists of I-Beams & plate steel, 3ft long x 18in wide x 18in tall or smaller, ¼ inch or thicker)
