Scrapping Kinda Sucks

my son picked up a good amount of square and rectangle tubing free off face book on time

Sanford and son

I have sooooo much JUNK! Mostly in my backyard, not that anyone is behind/beside me or can see it. Gotta deal with it as it warms up.

Wanna clear n fix up the pad n lean-to, behind the garage for storage. Once the 4x4 is gone n i rearrange some stuff, I'll have better drive back polebarn access but i don't wanna work back there much, poison ivy. I might get a fence for the old front carport(now open pad) to temp store the metal that I'll haul in soon, my backyard isn't super convenient. IDK not sure what would be a cheap n easy to move/setup fence, maybe chain-link with that privacy stuff and some cinder blocks?

Can't really see anything much from the road but I'd like to make it better n more organized n concealed. Not like i ever have visitors LOL

No one complained bout the car n it sat on my old carport pad all summer, looking like a POS LOL I'm in a good spot to not be noticed/bothered but why push my luck.

GONE!

BOOT, you're area sounds down right uncomfortable/dangerous to scrap in. Between the junkies, and people in parking lots trying to intimidate you, I can understand why you're hesitant to go out much. I'm not much of a people person, and I sure as hell don't like being walked up to for no apparent reason. I don't want anything to do with those kind of people.

My town/area is not really a bad area, just close to Flint. That is where most the junkies come from and scrap yards are.

People are just dicks around here scrapping or not, country/city period! I almost got in a fight with the garbage man. He dropped my can with the arm n spilled it, broken glass n junk everywhere in the street. At first he got out with gloves but then saw the mess and i saw him say FUCK n he got back in his truck n started to back down the street. I ran out after him and was yelling hey as he ignored me down the street but caught him n blocked him from driving off. Told him i saw him spill the can n to clean it up. He gets out(tall kid prob use to getting respect for his size) n walks up me to n says pointing his finger at me getting in my face, "ME N YOU GONNA HAVE A TALK!". I smiled and got ready to swing n said bout what :) He backed down and cleaned it up.

'He dropped my can with the arm n spilled it, broken glass n junk everywhere in the street".

I have the 96 gallon toter carts. About 1.5 years ago, I started putting a 96 gallon liner bag in it. they are not cheap but only use one a week and it keeps the can clean and maggot free. When they rotate it up the whole bag and contents slide out. when i roll it to the curb i fold the top of the bag over. I lap the side over the sides of the can during the week and secure it with a bungee cord to keep it open.

Seen those in/on a can for one area i go. Be the way to go, if i wasn't trying to pinch my pennies. Scrapping ain't making me rich LOL

When we got these arm-lift type cans. They said to bag everything and i did all but broken down boxes. BUT after scrapping i see sooo many people, that just put straight trash(anything) in their cans and have them overflowing.

Now I bag all household trash or anything messy. The loose trash, is only large/long plastic pieces, long bulbs(the broken glass), cardboard or wood with plastic i don't burn. I get SOOOOO much trash scrapping, I'd go thru all kinds of bags. I Tetras the trash in each week, not packing or pushed down, just layered right to fit the most. AND almost always my normal bags are in the bottom, so it falls out good. THEN I still have to take some to a friends or top off my elderly neighbors can(i ask permission, n take it out/back for him).

All the small pieces of junk from taking things apart. I bag in my small grocery plastic bags, lotta times double bagged.

We are suppose to get FREE trash pick-up here(not really town taxes) because the town let them start a landfill long ago(far outside town). Before the new cans, my limit was 8 trash bags and a large item or w/e. I've put out all kinds of stuff n they took it in the past. Their can don't fix 8 bags and we gotta call for any large time pick-up in advance and it's a HUGE hassle each time. I've had to call back numerous times cause they didn't come. Also they broke my old cans several times and i had to buy new ones. So they can kiss my ass bout the bagging everything!

[edit] I actually gotta go get the trash ready/filled up before it gets dark here soon and take it out.

Even in "conservative" Idaho, the county trash outfit is now learning how to "pile on." Right after my house fire cleanup, they cropped the "free" pickup load of trash from a ton to 1000 lb. They also increased the per pound charge, but I don't remember what that is. And part of the BS about that is, such as a fire clean up, is that much of the weight is MOISTURE

But it's worse, because there can be 200lbs difference in weight going into the entance scales and back out the exit scales. This means you might get charged for over weight even though in reality you are not.

A friend of one of my neighbors graciously loaned me his dump trailer, and that turned out to be a godsend, because there's a lot of shit you can dump at the "lower ramp" that you cannot do, when hand unloading, form a flatbed or pickup. During my trips there, I saw many stupid moves like a big container of lightweight all steel tube being dumped. Why they didn't take it to the recycle yard, I'll never know. That doesn't pay much, but it's better'n giving it to the county, and then getting charged if it's commercial or overweight for residential "free."

The RIDICULOUS part of the overweight horse shit is that, is just makes you make more trips. You are gonna take it there anyway, but more gas, more time and more bullshit trying not to get charged.

I rarely scrap, but saw some guys who were experienced at it take in cars. If they wanted the aluminum wheels the car would be on the trailer strapped down sitting on concrete blocks. When they got the to yard, they'd pull off the wheels that were just on with a single lug, let them fork the car off to the scrap pile and throw the blocks and wheels in the back of the pickup.

Of course anything on the car worth reselling, and the cats, were already removed. And they'd fill the inside of the car with shred and junk.

I saw one junkyard who was closing fill the inside of the cars with their contaminated dirt. And of course getting a water hose and wetting down all the scrap inside adds weight. Take the cars in while its raining.

The yard I use to go to YEARS ago. They'd use a crane to pick the car up off the trailer(I'd pull the lugs after unstrapping it) and then swing it into the ground, to knock the wheels off. I'd pick em up n toss em into the bed. But after they ripped me off on those two cars, never been back to that yard.

This recent place didn't know what equipment they had. So i made sure the wheels were loose(not corroded to the hubs) and only put 3 lugs back on. Plus i had my impact to zip them off(use to use a four-way). Was a good thing as even tho i went early-ish, there was a big truck n others, so not a slow time i hoped for. They picked the car up with a front loader or w/e n i grabbed my impact n got the wheels. They were just shitty steel wheels/tires but good rollers and now i can swap out some other alum ones on a diff car n then scrap those.

As i said in a prior post, i removed all the crap that i could to not get any shit. But i did put some metal back in. Just only stuff that i could pull out easy/quick and not super packed, so they could see the floors. In case they tried to say it was full of dirt, leaves, nuts broken glass or trash. All the small stuff(metal) went into the 4x4 extended cab. Still gotta get rid of those buckets of glass n dirt LOL Lotta work but if i had taken the car in as-is, prob would of got a bad rep at this new yard(tho i think standards are lower these days). It didn't have any good stuff for them to pick-off anyway.

I'll do the same prep for the 4x4 and then pack it full of metal as i can. Tho prob not the bed too much, I'll put some large bulky items in my bed, then toss em in the 4x4's when i get to the yard. If they had a larger scale to weight everything at once, I'd load up both beds but I'd rather keep it simple. I want those wheels as well to sell or alum scrap if they don't sell. So prob be the same way n they grab it n i grab the wheels, then they weight it. Not a huge place for turning/pulling around either. But i like the ease of getting there VS some other yards.

The other night out was pretty decent for how it's been and tonight was Super! Got 8 rotors n some other metal from this one house(same place had some not too long ago) but the star of the night, was they also set out a small cat. Should be worth more than everything else i got tonight including the rotors. Hell just that one stop, is the best I've done compared too any night for over a month :) I've had good scrap days last fall but they were usually high volume of good stuff(two very full loads but 8 hours of collecting). Still I didn't get much else really tho tonight, a treadmill and some random bits here n there. That first stop is prob gonna be the best i get till spring and glad I got it.

Not gonna post all my trips, just hated to end it at that last bummer post. And tonight was Great!

What do you guys do with the gas tanks?
Can you cut them up and scrap them later?

Drill/punch a hole in it n drain it, no need for removal. They mostly want to make sure it's not full of fuel or water(some people LOL)

The yard I went to has a sign saying all fuel tanks have to be removed.

I've done some scrapping but because it was convenient. Excavation in Philadelphia, we would find all kind of heavy steel, lead cables,, ...
It was only a 4 mile detour to the scrap yard at the end of the day.
I'm not driving around looking for it.
I did aluminum cans when my shop was a hangout. To much trouble and space.
I do have some copper cable and plumbing laying around. Might be time to unload it.
